CGL to Offer Workshop on Transfer-Era Documents of the National Archives

The Caribbean Genealogy Library (CGL) will host a presentation on Virgin Islands Transfer-Era documents that are held at the U.S. National Archives at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 28. It is located in the Al Cohen’s Plaza at the top of Raphune Hill on the 2nd floor, above Paint Depot. The workshop is free and open to the public.
In May 2015, CGL digitized 45 gigabytes of document data from the U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. CGL now offers samples of these documents on its Web site.
The workshop will assist genealogy and history researchers to get an understanding of the locations of V.I. documents within the U.S. National Archives and navigate the documents that have been added to the CGL Web site. Those documents can be found at http://cgl.vi/pages/indexNARA.html.
Participants at the CGL presentation will browse through samples of interesting documents and will get a sneak peek at more documents that will be posted in the coming year.
Examples of documents already on the Web site include passports issued between 1895 and 1921, tax lists, letters and journals from the cemetery commission, correspondence from the American Consul, and dog owner records.
Valerie Sims, a CGL member and avid history fan, has spent many hours looking through the NARA records posted on the Web site. She reported, with great enthusiasm, finding a photo of her great- grandmother's sister as well as a photo of the owner of I. Levin's. Sims had been looking for that photo for many years and was thrilled to finally find it. She said, "There is great stuff on the CGL Web site. I love it."
The library undertook this project in anticipation of the Transfer Centennial. Those interested in looking at the period around Transfer in 1917 are encouraged to attend the presentation and help interpret this part of V.I. history. Genealogists and family historians will enjoy the passport applications and related documents; many include wonderful details about the person and sometimes photos.
Caribbean Genealogy Library’s mission is to identify, preserve and provide access to Caribbean genealogy, history and cultural heritage information resources for the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. The library houses unique and rare books on V.I. history and culture, funeral booklets and microfilms. It provides access to church records and other documents.
